Action Duckpin Bowl at the Fountain Square Theater

Duckpin bowling is an old favorite for Indianapolis folks, so I'm not introducing anything new. There are two great Duckpin Bowling alleys in the Fountain Square Theater building downtown, and my friends and I spent Friday night there hanging out, eating pizza, drinking beer and bowling (or trying to!).
Duckpin bowling is a variation on regular 10-pin bowling, played with smaller balls and pins, which makes it more difficult to bowl strikes and spares. The alleys in the Theater building originally opened in 1928 and closed in 1957. They were renovated and re-opened in 1994 and feature authentic 1930s' equipment. Today duckpin houses are still found only in the eastern states with the exception of the alleys here in Fountain Square.

I went to Duckpin Bowling this weekend for the second time. It is a fun event but frustrating, and here is my opinion why.
Both times I have been the lanes were nearly empty, in fact my group was the only one in the room last time I went four months ago. But the people who work there aren't at all grateful for the business or excited about the fun of wacky bowling: they are grumpy and unpleasant and act like our fun is inconveniencing them.
I know the diner downstairs sin't really associated with the bowling, but it is fun to bowl then go get a burger and a shake after. But the service in the diner borders on incompetent - slow, forgetful, and sloppy.
Both these places of business - the bowling and the diner - could do with a serious overhauling and some lessons in customer satisfaction and marketing. They have a unique and intriguing product, but have no idea how to make it a desirable experience that lives up to the potential of what they have to offer.

That and the $3 beers. When they're not crowded they act like you're not supposed to be there.
Still just about the funnest/goofiest thing in Indy ! We need all we can get.

We didn't go to the diner downstairs, so we didn't have that problem. The guy behind the bar at the bowling was quite nice to us. It did take quite a while for our pizza to get made, but we blamed that on the kitchen.
