Proposal: Ikea Store at Eastgate Mall
Topic: Shopping
Posted: Fri, Jun 30, 2006
I was at dinner the other day with some friends, planning our next roadtrip to Shaumburg, Ill. to shop at Ikea, and riffing on where we'd like them to build an Ikea store in Indianapolis. After rejecting several locations, Eastgate Mall occurred to us. We should be city planners; we're so smart. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Realistic? Dream on?

That would be perfect.
For your next order of business I ask for a Trader Joe's on the southside.
Oh, and a Costco.

I'll second both those ideas -- southside is really easy to drive to, so both those stores would be great.

"They" are suppose to announce a redevelopment plan for Eastgate this summer. The whole place will be torn down. Plans are hush-hush. An Ikea would be a very welcome addition (and a Trader Joe's) but I doubt they'd put one anywhere south of 82nd.
They'll probably put in a quarter-mile dirt track, a zeppelin docking station, or a lead smelting plant.

I agree with JR. I don't have high expectations for the former Eastgate Mall location. IKEA would be FABULOUS but I don't think IKEA would put one there, do you? I think if they do, they'd do so in Hamilton County someplace (maybe that's the hush hush plan for the Fishers Airport???).
At any rate, I do hope that something good will happen with the former Eastgate mall. Just because it's Hamilton Co. shouldn't disqualify it from being a decent retail hub. Close to Irvington, I-70, I-465. Right???

They probably would put an Ikea somewhere in Hamilton County, where the traffic would make it impossible to pop in quickly. Of course if Carmelites couldn't get to it without seeing anything "urban" they'd never go, so the Eastgate Mall location is just a pipe-dream of mine, but it's the smarter location.
I'll have to look for more info on the Eastgate Mall development; I hadn't heard they were working on it. I figure'd it would just be abandoned until it fell down.

Eastgate would be PERFECT for an Ikea location. Easy access to I-70, I-465 & I-74 for people coming from Ohio and Kentucky where there are not currently stores. Ive written Ikea several times to let them know that people in Indiana would shop Ikea but so far the rumor mill has is that on 7/11/06 they are announcing a store to be open in Cincinatti. Looks like a few more years of dreaming.

The current owners of the Eastgate Consumer Mall are aparently planning to demolish the existing building. There is a sign on the old Cub Foods building that says a Gym will be there soon. More info on the demolition here: http://www.jtlcapital.com/page.php?s=news_Eastgate

The shopping center will come down, can't happen fast enough; something was supposed to have been announced about now. A rough idea of the plan is here (huge pdf):
http://www6.indygov.org/dmdplan/indianapolisinsight/pdfdocuments/the_view_1205.pdf
Salient portion:
"Potential development in these areas should focus on design issues related to architecture, building size, parking, landscaping and lighting to promote a pedestrian-oriented “village” or “small town” atmosphere. Strip commercial development (integrated centers set back from rights-of-way by parking areas), large-scale freestanding retail uses and heavy industrial development are generally inappropriate
within this land use category. So far the Village Mixed-Use category has been used for the historic villages of New Augusta, Oaklandon, West Newton, and Millersville. This designation was also used to encourage village-style redevelopment of Fort Harrison and Eastgate Mall."

Indy most certainly needs an IKEA, but I'm not sure if they'd go for Eastgate. At this point, I'd take one anywhere closer than Schaumburg!

It'd be great if Indy got an IKEA, the 9 hours we spent on the road back and forth to Schaumberg last week was soul-killing. I'd be more than happy with something near Cincinatti, so I'm pulling for the OHIKEA people too.

Having recently moved to Indy from Long Island (and needing shelving for the new house) I just said to my hubby, "you know' I think we can find what we need at Ikea! Have you seen one around? No, I'll look it up on-line."
So why am I NOT SURPRISED there isn't one!

It's my understanding that IKEA has plans to be in the region in '07. Site is probably already determined, but not made public yet. They have very strict location requirements, primarily major road frontage, vast parking, EZ access.
I believe that 96th & Michigan, Exit 10 in Noblesville, Metropolis in Plainfield or Maybe 86th & 465 would be their best bets.
They're coming...and it'l be a small footprint store like their 2nd one in the Chicago area.

I definitely think an Ikea in Indy is a fantabulous idea!! Hauling a couch on the top of my ford escape from Schamburg to Indy... oh how I will never forget. Not to mention it pouring down rain. Eastgate.. nah, Even though I'm a Southsider, I would rather drive to Plainfield or 65 S. off the CO. line road exit.

FYI: A new Ikea is being built between Cincy and Dayton, on I-75; a little closer than the Chicago locations. According to reports, IKEA looks for areas with a metro population of more than 2 million, so it might be a few years before Indy lands one.

I've heard that they may build an IKEA at the 65 S. and County Line exit close to where they are going to build the new Cabelas. Someone said that IKEA is looking at the land on Emerson across from Kroger and Walmart. It would be next to the new Hilton Garden. Has anyone else heard this?

Hello! Do you know if they make any plugins to help
with SEO? I'm trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I'm not seeing very good success.
If you know of any please share. Cheers!
