Lunch at Music Mill

Anytime a nightclub purports to also be a restaurant, red flags go up. There are fewer dining moments more dispiriting than eating a half-heartedly prepared meal in an underlit cavernous room that carries the odors of last night's festivities: stale beer, bleach-and-mildew bar rags, and just a soupcon of vomit. A friend once took me to a bar that served a "great breakfast." But the rows of liquor bottles and stale air just reminded me of the collective sweaty desperation that was acted out only hours before. The eggs were leaden in my mouth.
Happily, this is not the experience at Music Mill.
The restaurant is in a room separate from the event area, with its very own atmosphere. If you have chrysophobia (that's fear of the color orange) then you'll want to give MM a wide berth; otherwise, you're in for an enjoyable dining experience. The decor is modern, clean and bright, with a curved wall full of windows, high ceilings, and lots of orange lucite, which sounds like it might be hard on the eyeballs, but is actually quite pleasing in combination with the creamsicle walls. Despite the high ceilings and hard surfaces, the acoustics were under control, and we were able to carry on a pleasant conversation without shouting at each other. Its only minor downfall was the entrance, which is shared with the club entrance and doesn't in any way indicate that there might be a restaurant on the inside. The eatery would benefit from a more open-armed entryway.
One of the surprisingly pleasant aspects of MM is the price. Where one might expect them to employ a pre-event price gouge, instead one finds good food at fair prices. Sandwiches are $5.95 to $8.45 and salads are in the $8 - $12.50 range. Entrees are $12-$20.
And the food is good. I had a "suzza" -- basically a pie made out of a thin, cracker-like crust. My chicken panzanella suzza was filled with chunks of chicken, peppers, onions, provolone, and marinara sauce, with some tasty fresh basil strips. While I would have wished for a thicker more robust sauce, I found myself polishing off most of this rather large lunch.
Friends had a blackened chicken sandwich, which got a thumbs up, and grilled cheese panini, which was made with provolone, havarti and Swiss cheeses and finished with apple-honey mustard sauce. The Caesar side salad was served on a chilled plate (nice touch) with croutony toast rounds. The black bean burger, served with red chili sauce and the surprising addition of cucumbers, didn't seem to be homemade, but met with approval from our sometime-vegetarian friend.
On a weekday, there were only a handful of diners. Our service was friendly, prompt, and capable of handling our larger group of seven with no glitches. One note about the furniture: the chairs were a rather snug fit. If you want some wiggle room in your seat, make sure to get a booth or a banquette.
I'd like to go back on a concert night and see how the atmosphere and service changes. For lunch, though, it was a welcome and soothing alternative to overcrowded lunch joints.

I've been to Music Mill for dinner and also had an extremely pleasing experience. Service was friendly and prompt. The atmosphere was chic and trendy, and I loved their Bacon-Wrapped Scallops. Not to mention their half-price martinis on Tuesdays and Fridays persauded me to try one. The drink was gorgeous and also delicious-not at all watered down. Great experience for a great price.
