Bagel Fair

I've had Manhattan bagels and Brooklyn bagels and Philadelphia bagels and chain store bagels. But no one makes better bagels than the folks at Bagel Fair. If you don't like bagels it's because you've never had a good one. Go here immediately.
It's funny how things that end up playing a big part in your life escape your notice for so long. I think I lived here for several years before I even realized that that Bagel Fair existed. It's easy to miss in its tiny little storefront in Nora Plaza, which was too bad for me. For years I ate the dry and tasteless bagels that they served at the little coffee stand in our office building. When we moved buildings, I was forced to find a new place.
Apparently, most of the local coffee and breakfast shops in the area get their bagels from the same place. I think it's called "Sucky Bagels." Please stop serving them. You're hurting the reputation of bagels everywhere. No wonder people would rather eat a bad donut from Kroger. After overpaying for dry, unchewable bagels for several weeks, I stumbled onto Bagel Fair during one of my many visits to Wild Oats.
Oh. My. God.
You're probably starting to wonder how someone can get so enthused over a piece of bread with hole in it. I don't know. There's just something transporting about a perfect bagel. And the ones at BF are pretty damn close to perfect.
The first test of a good bagel is: are they good plain? Can you eat it untoasted, un-cream cheesed, unbuttered? Most of the time, the answer is no. But plain is the only way I get my bagels at BF. They really don't need anything else. The inside is dense and pillowy and very chewable. The outside has the very thinnest of crispy crackly crust on it. And if you're really really lucky, you'll get a batch that just came out of the oven, so they're still warm. I almost always get the multi-grain, which has a nutty and ever-so-slightly sweet flavor.
If you're not into the multi-grain, they have a dozen other flavors, sometimes going out on a limb at holidays (pumpkin bagels in the Fall). They also sell something called "Flagels" which are big and thin and crunchy.
And that's about it for the menu. If you want cream cheese or butter, you can get it. They even have bagel sandwiches. The coffee's decently drinkable if not spectacular (it won't peel the enamel off your teeth like Starbuck's will), and they have a fridge case of milk, OJ, water, and take out containers of flavored and plain cream cheese. The folks there are friendly — and not in a corporate-mandated-you're-not-wearing-enough-flare kind of way.
Atkins is garbage. Have a damn bagel for breakfast. At 60 cents a pop, why not buy a bag for your colleagues at work? You'll be a hero. I promise.

This place was very popular when I was in high school, and the school cops used to stake it out during the lunch periods to make sure no students snuck out and ate there. Haven't been in years. But I'm hungry for a cream cheese and lox bagel, sounds good...

I'll be the first to admit that I don't 'get' the bagel thing (no matter where they come from). But one thing that I can attest to, when we have Indy expatriates stay with us, a trip to Bagel Fair is mandatory.

She wrote this whole article on Bagel Fair, and then didn't actually bring us any bagels! Sheesh. I'm so hungry.
