Summer's a-Comin'

After a mercurial spring, I am so ready for summer: Muggy, sweaty, stultifying, tick-infested, crime-rate-increasing, glorious summer. Here’s why.
Indianapolis Indians Minor league baseball is so much more fun that major league. Where else can you see giant meat product puppets racing each other, sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at the top of your lungs, and drink above-average beer?
Indianapolis Greenways If I wanted to, I could run all the way from Carmel to downtown Indy on trails. (Yeah. Like that's going to happen.) My favorite stretch is the Central Canal Towpath. It doesn't get as clogged with strollers as the Monon, and the canal draws turtles, herons, and the occasional muskrat.
Indianapolis Museum of Art Summer Nights Film Series Grab some low lawn chairs and a picnic dinner and head over to the IMA, where they show favorite movies under the stars on Fridays at 5:30. The first one this year is the Iron Giant on Friday, June 24.
Indy JazzFest It's June 17-19 this year. JazzFest always has a great eclectic lineup. '05 includes Buselli-Walarab Jazz Orchestra, the Commodores, Tony Bennett, and the David Sanborn Group.
Lake Monroe Indianapolis, exactly, but it is a great recreational lake. Half the lake is designated a "no wake" zone for those who prefer puttering and fishing to tearing around on jet skis. And strict housing regs keep the lakeside looking pristine. I've even seen bald eagles flying overhead.
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony on the Prairie Imagine a warm breeze caressing your cheek as the orchestra accompanies the setting sun. I'm no classical music snob, but this is transporting.
Indiana State Fair Best. People. Watching. Ever.
So what else is worth doing in or around Indianapolis in the summer?

Here are some more ideas...
1. Farmer's Markets- Get your Sat. started early - Support Indiana farmers and vendors and make your way to one of the markets- pick up fresh flowers, bread, berries, and assorted vegetables...It's an ideal trip for the cook who's tired of the blah produce in a lot of the grocery stores. (check Nuvo, Intake, or Star for locations--including downtown, Broad Ripple, Carmel, Zionsvillle, Noblesville, Lebanon, etc.)
2. Eagle Creek Marina- Pack a picnic and rent a pontoon boat. Pontoon boats are in good condition and reasonably priced at EC. Stop at Rick's for a cocktail (skip the food) and take in the scenery and Jimmy Buffet/island tunes. Good times.
3. Hit the driving range at night- Just feels like summer! Grab your club and spend a few bucks to get rid of stress while perfecting your swing. (Noblesville Golf and Batting Center- open 'til 10p. on weekends)

Early morning runs in Eagle Creek park can be pretty nice. Lot's of deer coming out to feed along the roads. You have to watch your step running the wooded trails ... as they sometimes serve as resting spots for young fawns. You can also watch the rowing teams workout on the lake. There is also a beach for sunbathing and swimming too. Lot's of things to do there:

If you take a late evening drive in Downtown Indianapolis on race weekend, May 26 - 30, the sights may be a bit more interesting than other evenings. The Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission is planning to light up buildings around Downtown with projections of paintings by Indiana artists as part of Indianapolis 2005, the city's yearlong cultural celebration. Starting May 26, six images will be projected from sunset to midnight on the exterior walls of the Hyatt Regency Downtown, Indianapolis Zoo's Dolphin Adventure Building and the Indiana Convention Center. The spiral parking garage ramp at the Indianapolis Airport also will be colorfully illuminated and bands of colored light and black and white checks will project onto the airport parking structure. Additional works by Indiana artists will be projected on buildings around Downtown during major events throughout the year. For more information on Indianapolis 2005, visit www.indy.org.
