Keystone Art Cinema opens December 9th
Topic: Film & TV

We've discussed it before, and the event is closer to happening: the new Landmark Theater's Keystone Art Cinema will open at Keystone at the Crossing Mall on December 9th.
The new theater (which is billing itself as "upscale") will have 7 screens, a lounge outside the theater featuring live music and a bar--and you can take your drinks into the theater with you. 8 of the intially scheduled films:
Syriana
The Squid and the Whale
Bee Season
Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic
The Passenger
Capote
Memoirs of a Geisha
Mrs. Henderson Presents
Conspicously absent: Brokeback Mountain, which doesn't have Indianapolis on it's list of "soon to be showing at." If this new theater means this movie won't find it's way to Indianapolis at what happens to be an opportune time, I'll take back all the cheerleading I did back in March.

CAN'T WAIT! This will rock. I want to see all but one of this new theater's premiere films (I'm not seeing Bee Season; I read the book which was dour), and may have to see Geisha on opening night. The Sarah Silverman movie is supposed to be hilarious (and, of course, quite crass). I'm sure Brokeback Mountain will open here, maybe just not at this theater...

Hi,
Just found the site, and I already love it. But a quick note: Keystone Art's site only lists Syriana through Capote as opening on Friday. Did you get this list from somewhere that means Memoirs really is there on Friday?? Because while I can wait until 12/23, I'd happily see it on 12/9.
Thanks for the updates on the conception and realization of what can only be a great thing for the city.

Oh, you're right, it says Geisha starts on 12/23. Drat. And Mrs. Henderson Presents starts on 12/25. It does only list six titles for this Friday -- I wonder whether one (Syriana?) will be playing on two screens...

Yes, I was wondering what might play on two screens, or what gem they might be holding back to surprise us with?! :)

I posted on your last post regarding the closure of the Key and Castleton theaters because of Landmark.
I also discovered that Rural on Mass Ave is closing and moving shop to Bloomington. And the Patio just closed.
I'll be one of the first in Landmark. They have movies I want to see. But I can't help feeling that this convenience comes at a cost to the uniqueness of our city. Sure, Keystone had sticky floors and uncleaned bathrooms. But they were _our_ sticky floors and bathrooms. Landmark: they have nothing to do with Indy except that they take our money. Yipee.

And just where is Brokeback Mountain going to play? A recent search of local theaters within a 60-mile radius shows NO theaters in this area planning to show the award-winning flick.
Gee, is anyone surprised? In this city, I'd almost be afraid of going there without at least a contingent of friends, lest I be bashed upon leaving the theater. Oh well, guess it's off to Chicago for the weekend.

I gather that it's not in "Wide release" until January 6th, although it's been getting a lot of hype now, which is a little odd. I also have issues with the "now in select theaters" that it's going to are to cities much smaller than Indianapolis. I hate that. If it's opening in 30 cities, Indianapolis should be one of them.

The early hype is so that it meets the end of the year viewing requirements for awards. It's a nice way for studios to slide in at the last minute, but not compete against larger films during the holiday season.

I am quite disappointed that Brokeback Mountain will not be showing during the annual holiday visit my hometown. Is it that Indy has not yet grown up. I'm glad I left.

General public choices currently control the entertainment marketplace in a way that was nearly impossible prior to the world-wide-web and also the viral submitting of current information, as well astotal entertainment material. Once you add to that distribution on the internet, news flash, web pages, from gossip to whole films. This is a brand-new environment. Much of it really good, some not.
