Breaking Away
Posted: Wed, May 18, 2005
I'm a Ball State Alum, so seeing the movie "Breaking Away" wasn't an obligatory part of my college education the way it seems to have been for Indiana University grads. I've lived in Indiana for 23 years and I never saw it, so when I noticed it on cable the other day, I TIVO'ed and watched it to round out my Hoosier education. The 1979 movie is set and filmed in Bloomington, Indiana, and is a nice, quiet "coming of age" movie about four Bloomington High School graduates who are not planning on going to college (AKA "cutters"), and their interaction with I.U. students during the "Little 500" bicycle race.
I knew that limestone quarrying was (is?) a fairly prominent part of the Indiana economy (the Empire State Building is clad in Indiana limestone), but I didn't get what the epithet "cutter" meant until halfway through the movie. (d'oh!) The animosity between the town kids and college students seemed overly harsh; I wonder if there was really that much resentment between the two groups.
Interesting to see the I.U. campus the way it was back in the seventies. I'm familiar enough with the campus to recognize the buildings in the movie, (hey, that's the library!), but not enough to know how much has changed since it was made. And it's amazing how skinny everyone was back then. Dennis Quaid, who plays cutter kid Mike, was quite buff.
I didn't realize the movie was a Best Picture nominee, or an Oscar winner for original screenplay. According to the trivia on IMDB, the Cutters have had a team in the Little 500 every year since the movie was made.
In doing some googling on the movie, I discovered the site "When Movies Were Movies" by Hoosier movie host/obscure local celebrity Dave Smith, who was a pioneer in television in Indiana in the early days of TV. He has a page on "Movies Made in Indiana," which is somewhat interesting, except that he says actors John Cusack and Steve Gutenberg were associated with the movie "Breaking Away" and as far as I can tell, that isn't the case.
It seems that practically every movie set in Indiana is about sports, which is kind of boring for those of us who aren't really sports fans. But I guess that is what Indiana is known for...

The "Cutters" team that has been in the Little 500 for years has not, in fact, been a team manned by townies for quite some time. I'm not up on the history of the Little 500 to know if there ever were townies in the race or if it's all just movie folklore, but the "Cutters" of recent years have been a dorm team. When I was at IU (late 80s/early 90s), I think they were from Wright Quad. Not sure if that's still the case, but I don't know if townies could even enter the race.
Also interesting is that the track used for the race in the movie has been gone for a long, long time. It's now a landscaped, open area called the Arboretum that's used to hang out, study, nap, or just to get from one side of campus to the other. They still have some big limestone gates that I think may be from the old stadium, but the bike race moved to the soccer stadium a long time ago.

Additional trivia: Steve Tesich, who wrote the screenplay, was a member of my dad's fraternity. The opera-loving character was based on one of their other frat brothers, Dave Blase, who was a fan of Prussian (not Italian) culture and opera; he really did ride almost 100% of one of the races, and won as part of the Phi Kappa Psi team. He can be seen in the movie, at the end -- he's one of the announcers on the podium, congratulating the winners, in a red jacket. I went to high school with his daughter, who is now an amazingly talented opera singer.
The Cutters were from Wright when I was in school there (early 90s)...and I don't think "townies" are allowed to enter the race. I wonder whether any have tried to enter, in recent years.

It occurs to me that the "Cutters" t-shirt would be a fun one to get from http://www.neighborhoodies.com.

In most of the big cities and state capitals ... if a building is faced with Limestone ... it's faced with Indiana Limestone. Although the trend to use concrete has reduced the use of the limestone facing material the industry still operates about 9 quarries and is good for 26 million in sales each year.

Steph, two of my all time favorite movies that take place in Indiana that aren't about sports are a "Christmas Story" and "Going all the Way" if you haven't seen them they are quite good and entertaining.

I say to you, I certainly get irked even as other people think about worries that they just do not recognise about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest as neatly as defined out the entire thing without having side effect , other folks can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

Together with the whole thing that seems to be developing inside this subject material, many of your points of view are generally quite exciting. Nonetheless, I am sorry, but I can not give credence to your whole theory, all be it refreshing none the less. It seems to me that your comments are not entirely rationalized and in reality you are your self not entirely confident of the point. In any event I did take pleasure in examining it.
