Event: Library Book Sale
Topic: Books | Events & Festivals
Posted: Fri, Jan 7, 2005
From January 14-16, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library will hold the first of its 2005 book sales at the Library Services Center on 24th and Meridian.
The library has several sales each year, where you can find great bargains on former library books as well as titles donated by the public. There are seven sales in 2005 (see schedule); some are 3-day sales and some last a whole week.
The selection is vast and varied. There are large sections for fiction, children's books, history, biography, health, and travel. Mystery and sci-fi have their own categories, separate from the larger general fiction section. Mass-market paperbacks (you know, the small ones) line the windowsill at the back, and are crammed into little bookcases sprinkled about. I usually go to these sales with a few specific titles in mind, but with these low prices, I'm not hesitant to add a few "impulse buys" to my bag.
Blocked off from the main sale area is a small section they call "New, Used, and Unusual." It has a separate entranceway (by the bookcase next to the main sale entrance), and you must check out these items separately from anything you purchase in the main area. In here you'll find some of the very latest titles, rare books, first editions, and fine bindings, as well as other odds and ends like DVDs, art prints, old magazines, etc. These items do not adhere to the price list below; they are individually priced (usually lightly penciled inside the front cover).
The first night of each sale is "Friends Night," where the sale is only open to contributors to the library's Foundation, who must show their membership cards for entrance. Become a Friend and take advantage of the first-pick opportunities at the sale! The weeklong sales end with special deals: the penultimate day is Half-Price Day, and the final day is Bag Day, where you can fill an entire bag (provided) for only $2.00.
Book sale prices*:
Adult Hardback Books $2.00
Soft-cover Books $1.00
Juvenile Hardback Books $1.00
Pocket Paperback Books .50
Juvenile Paperbacks .25
Records & Tapes $.50
[* Does not include items in the "New, Used, and Unusual" section]

This book sale happened over the weekend. How did it go? I'd like to go to the next one. I'm always a sucker for throwing down cash for cheap books.

It went well -- it was very crowded! I went both on Friday night and on Saturday morning, and was disciplined enough to only spend $13 total, which may be a record low for me. There are a couple of changes from the last time I went: they moved everything around (grrr), and according to the signs, they upped the price on their Bag Day bags to $5. It seems like there was a lot more hardback fiction on display, and a lot less in paperback -- but I still found a few things I was looking for, plus a few impulse buys. I got Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" for 50 cents, six issues of British movie magazine Sight & Sound for 25 cents each, three issues of Granta for $1 each (MSRP $14.95!), and a few assorted works of fiction.

I also went, and spent $28, but that was because I bought some books from the more expensive "New, Used and Unusual" section -- specifically some books on Indianapolis Architecture, the Indianapolis ABCs, and Indiana Post office Murals, all of which I'm going to loan to fellow IndyScribers. In the regular book sections, I got some good stuff, too. Umberto Eco's Baudolino was one title I found. The crowd freaked me out, though. We're going later next time; whether or not we miss out on some books. That, or I'm taking some Xanax beforehand.
